I grew up in a house where we used to have Shebeens /Blues Parties every weekend. Watching the guys bringing in the massive speaker boxes and the highly decorated valve amps and setting it all up was a joy. Also, on Sundays my mum used to blast out the Jim Reeves and Ace Cannon on repeat. This was my first experiences into playing music, having to change the records on the “gram” (as it was called at that time).
My first experiences of DJ’ing came about at the age of 17 when I used to take my mums records to the local social club and play them on the one turntable.
In 1980 I bought my first equipment from Tandys (was the go-to place for all hi-fi) which was a 100-watt stereo receiver, a 5-band equaliser and 2 x 100-watt speakers. I would then play at friends’ parties and family events.
In the mid 80s I linked up with a couple of friends, pooled our money together and bought some speaker boxes, amplifiers, crossover and echo chamber and formed Liberation Sound.
The sound run for about 5 years but differences of opinions meant we went our separate ways.
In 1989, I got my first break on pirate radio Metro FM which was one of a couple of pirate stations broadcasting in Birmingham at that time. My brother called me Big Belly P and it just stayed from then.
At the same time, I got my first residency in a pub called The Beehive in Handsworth. Playing 4 nights a week (Thurs-Sun). This ended in 1997
Was very busy in the 90s as I was also getting bookings at the nightclubs in and around Handsworth. These included Thasha’s, FCF, Alcazar, 104 as well as regular bookings at the various blues parties in and around Handsworth.
In 2003 I joined Real Radio and did 2 shows a week playing reggae music and slow jams. When they closed down in 2009, I took a break from DJ’ing although was getting regular bookings for all types of events.
In 2016 I went into promoting Observer Supa Powa Sound System. Notable events were One Love Festival Sound clash 2016 and 2017. Winning UK Rumble 2019 and reaching the finals of World Clash 2022.
My music to chill to are Slim Smith and Phyllis Dillon (Reggae) and Barry White and Teddy Pendergrass (Soul) however depending on my vibes I can listen to most genres of music.
